If you really want to reduce the amount of waste you produce or have been attempting to live a zero-waste lifestyle, start by creating your own eco-starter kit! Having the right tools can make reducing your waste easy.
This is probably the easiest and the first item in your eco-starter kit . Having one means you avoid getting plastic/paper bags from store bought goods. We suggest you buy linen or hemp as they are typically more sustainably produced and have longer life span.
Reusable Water Bottle
This is also a no-brainer if you want to live a plastic-free life. There are more and more refilling stations available around so you don’t have to worry about running out.
Jars and Containers
These are used in a lot of things. But this is mainly to store your unpackaged items when you go shopping for food and other home and care essentials.
Wooden or Bamboo Toothbrush
If there are 1 billion toothbrushes thrown away by US alone, what more the whole world? They end up in the ocean just like any other particles from land, and are mistaken for food. Use compostable toothbrushes made out of wood or bamboo.
Apart from all the trash women produce because of monthly visits, women should not pay the amounts of money they do just to take care of their periods every month and they deserve access to a safe, non-toxic product.
Stainless Steel or Glass Straws
This may not be a necessity for some as they could just always refuse the straw. However, it’s a nice addition to homemade green juices and smoothies.
Stop carrying plastic utensils with you, and avoid the plastic cutleries offered when eating out. Wooden utensils carry fewer bacteria and don’t leach toxins into food. They’re also compostable.
Your eco-starter kit can be a mix of different things, from shampoo and soap bars to recyclable cameras. It’s all up to you! But remember, caring for the environment means there is willingness to change your current lifestyle. If this sounds challenging, just think of all life in the planet and how much you’re willing to sacrifice to do that. The key is, just be mindful at all times.
